The trailer for The Boys series three has been released, and it is fair to say we will be seeing an even more unhinged version of the show's primary villain, Homelander.
At the conclusion of series two, Homelander was betrayed by his own son, who decided to side with his arch-nemesis, Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban.
Not only that, but his love interest, Stormfront, was blown to bits by his son Ryan.
Homelander's murderous tendencies weren't exactly hidden in the first two series, but according to Antony Starr, who plays the character, things are going to be turned up a notch for the leader of 'The Seven'.
“There are two words that Eric (Kripke, writer and showrunner) has said to me about Season 3,” Starr told Collider back in October of 2020.
“His description for Homelander Season 3 was, ‘Two words, homicidal maniac.’ That’s all I know."
In the first two series of The Boys, Homelander was seen as a Captain America type hero to his adoring public and to the media, while behind the scenes he was a psychopath.
In the trailer for series three, we see a couple of shots that suggest the mask is slipping.
Homelander 'off the leash'
“I’m actually looking forward to seeing Homelander off the leash. It’ll be really fun, just seeing him go unhinged and exact revenge,” Starr continued.
“If you look at the end of Season 2, some people should be more scared than others, for sure. William Butcher should always have an alarm bell ringing in his head, and I think some other people have firmly put themselves in the line of fire for Season 3. It should be a lot of fun.”
The two other main take aways from the trailer is that Butcher now has the ability to make himself a 'Supe' via a mysterious serum, while we were also given a glimpse of the new character Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles.
