Ralph Fiennes has reflected on his role in Schindler's List, saying he didn't even need to say yes to the character as it was assumed he would take it.
The 1993 movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, tells the story of Oskar Schindler a German businessman and industrialist who helps Jews escape the Holocaust by employing them in his factories during World War II.
Fiennes plays one of the primary antagonists in the film, Amon Goth, a ruthless Nazi SS officer. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
Speaking to Collider, Fiennes commented on the casting process.
"I had met Steven briefly, as one of many people he was meeting, and then I didn't even ... I mean, the part was great clearly and then when the offer came through it was a no-brainer. It was wonderful," he said.
"I think there are moments you're lucky to have as an actor when you're asked to be part of something that feels like it's going to be quite momentous. I mean, for Steven, it was going to be his passion work, I think.
"No, it was a no-brainer - I was delighted. I didn't even say yes. I didn't even need to say yes - it was a given."
Who nearly directed Schindler's List?
Spielberg was initially offered the chance to direct before turning it down, believing he was not mature enough to make a movie about the Holocaust.
Roman Polanski, Brian De Palma, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese and Billy Wilder were all linked with the movie.
Scorsese came close, but Spielberg eventually took the chance to direct it himself.
"I thought Marty would do a great job with it," Spielberg said previously.
"He wouldn’t back down from truth or violence. But the minute I gave it to Marty, I missed it. I’d given away a chance to do something for my children and family about the Holocaust."
