Sir Ridley Scott doesn't have time for criticism over Napoleon's historical accuracy.
The new epic, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, will be theatrically released in cinemas by Sony before becoming available on Apple+ in November of 2023.
'A look at the military commander's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.'
Phoenix stars as Napoleon alongside Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, Phil Cornwell, Ian McNeice, Paul Rhys, John Hollingworth and Mark Bonnar.
After watching the initial trailer, historian Dan Snow made a TikTok pointing out various historical inaccuracies.
“I love historical epics, I love Ridley Scott, I’m going to be watching this movie,” he said. “ it ain’t a documentary, we know that much!
“He did not come from nothing. His dad was in fact an aristocrat. He did not conquer everything. He conquered quite a lot. It was very impressive, but he did not conquer everything. He didn’t conquer Britain. That’s part of ‘everything’, so.”
Some footage shows Napoleon's campaign in Egypt as he is seen commanding a battle in front of the Pyramids. Snow explained: "He never did this! But it looks cool.”
Sir Ridley Scott issued a response to the criticisms in an interview with the New York Times, simply telling detractors: "Get a life."
