Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are widely recognised as being two of the nicest guys in the movie business, so it is no surprise to hear of their latest act of generosity.
Since 2 May 2023, several productions both in film and television have been impacted by the strike of the Writers Guild of America.
The two main reasons for the strike are residual payments from streaming media and the potential influence of AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
The WGA are going up against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). In May of 2020, a Minimum Basic Agreement principle was put in place which assured writers of a guaranteed wage while working on broadcast television shows.
The strike concerns writers on late-night talk shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The host has revealed that Damon and Affleck offered to pay the wages of his writing staff until the strike was over, but he turned them down, while referencing his fake feud with the former.
“Ben Affleck and the despicable Matt Damon contacted me and offered to pay our staff for two weeks, a week each, they wanted to pay out of their own pocket," he said on the Strike Force Five podcast.
“I felt that that was not their responsibility.”
While the strike is ongoing, Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and John Oliver have combined for the aforementioned podcast.
What do striking writers want?
The goals that the WGA want to achieve are as follows:
- Increase funding and job security for writers
- Increase the size of writers' rooms
- Limit the use of artificial intelligence in the writing process
