Julia Roberts has reacted to the death of beloved Friends star Matthew Perry, whom she dated for a short period in the 1990s.
The Pretty Woman actress guest-starred in a two-part episode of Friends in the second season. She played Susie Moss, a former classmate of Chandler who was left embarrassed after he lifted up her skirt during a school play when they were kids.
Roberts and Perry became close during the production and eventually became a couple, though the relationship only lasted a few months.
In October of 2023, Perry tragically passed away at his home after drowning in his jacuzzi.
Roberts had the following to say in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
"The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking. I think that, you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can.
"All good thoughts and feelings," Roberts added about her stint on Friends."They were all so welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character and it was a really fun time."
Perry broke up with Roberts
In his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry detailed how it was actually he who ended the relationship.
"Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable," he wrote in the book.
"Instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can't begin to describe the look of confusion on her face."
The outpouring of grief following Perry's passing was massive, with family, friends and the legions of Friends fans left devastated.
