Iron Man star Jeff Bridges has revealed that he was initially "frustrated" while filming the movie that kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Back in 2008, Robert Downey Jr. was the surprise choice to play Tony Stark / Iron Man, while Bridges was subsequently cast as the main villain of the piece, Obadiah Stane, a colleague of Stark's who eventually becomes Iron Monger.
Bridges received praise for his performance, while the interactions between him and Downey Jr. were recognised as a highlight of the movie.
But, the Oscar-winning actor says he wasn't happy with the improvisational atmosphere on the set, to begin with.
“Downey was so great in that, and we had a ball making it,” Bridges told The Independent.
“It was kind of written day by day; we’d go into our trailers and we’d try and figure out how we’re going to do the day’s work, basically. It was very frustrating for me until I made a little adjustment in my mind, because I like to kind of know my lines and study and all."
Bridges explains that he eventually made that "adjustment" to relax and embrace director Jon Favreau's vision.
“I just made a little adjustment – ‘Jeff, relax man, have fun; you’re making a $200m studio film. You know, just have fun – look at these guys you get to play with,'" he continued.
"So we just had a wonderful time.”
Downey Jr. would go on to play Stark to critical acclaim in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
