Zoe Saldana talks the end of the journey for the Guardians of the Galaxy

Zoe Saldana has teased an emotional end to the journey of the Guardians of the Galaxy in The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.

The actress first played the role of Gamora in the first Guardians movie and soon became an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Writer and director James Gunn recently said that the third Guardians movie will be the last featuring our current heroes as a group; Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, Nebula and Mantis.

And, it seems like it may tug at the heart strings.

"It is an accurate representation. It is a farewell," Saldana told ComicBook.com.

"James Gunn is a really good writer. He really likes to write human characters with flaws. In a way, it's going to be a nice conversation, just like Avatar, to look around you. It's not just about your journey, it's about the journey of your environment and the people around you... maybe animals and nature.

"So it's going to be really nice."

Saldana is currently promoting Avatar: The Way of Water.

Do you need to watch the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special?

In the festive period of 2022, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was released on Disney+. The story sees Mantis and Drax trying to cheer up Peter Quill by kidnapping his hero from Earth - Kevin Bacon.

The comedic, Christmas-centric storyline has led to some fans suggesting that it is perhaps not part of the MCU canon.

However, Gunn says fans should watch it in order to see what the gang is up too before Guardians 3.

"Well, I'm always trying to be balanced with these things, so I think it's wonderful," Gunn said, tongue-in-cheek.

"People should see the Holiday Special. You're obviously gonna learn a lot about where the Guardians have been in the past few years. You know, you're gonna see how they now inhabit Knowhere. They've got a new ship called the Bowie.

"They've got a dog is part of their crew now who has telekinesis named Cosmo. So where you get to learn all that, and then there's a couple of bigger pieces of spoiler-y lore. You're gonna learn all of those things. In a way, the Holiday Special was a Trojan Horse for me to sneak in stuff that becomes important in Volume 3, so I don't have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie explaining it."

Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3 will be released on 5 May 2023.
