George Miller's 'Furiosa' begins filming

The prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road has begun filming, with Chris Hemsworth confirming the launch with a social media post.

Furiosa will act as a prequel to Fury Road and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa, who was previously portrayed by Charlize Theron.

Hemsworth and Tom Burke will feature in supporting roles, and the latter posted a picture on Twitter and Instagram with the caption "A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins".

The exact plot of Furiosa remains under wraps for the moment, but we do know it will focus on the origins of Theron's film-stealing hero of Fury Road and her journey from the Green Place to Immortan Joe's layer.

Miller previously provided Deadline with a few details, saying:

"I’ll tell you how it’s going when it’s finished, but it has got off to a lovely start.

"All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about.

"Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga."

Will Theron return as Furiosa?

Though Theron was arguably the most popular factor from Fury Road, the fact the next film is a prequel means that we won't be seeing her reprise the role, at least not in Furiosa.

The actress has previously expressed her disappointment at not getting to return as the hero.

"It’s a tough one to swallow," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He’s a master, and I wish him nothing but the best. Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her.

"She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on."
