When Warner Bros. went under a restructuring at an executive level last year, plans for various movies were initially scrapped, including a second Wonder Woman sequel.

After Wonder Woman 3 was initially shelved, star Gal Gadot tweeted: "A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman. I've been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I'm grateful for YOU. The fans. Can't wait to share her next chapter with you."

The Israeli actress has portrayed Diana Prince in numerous DC movies including two Wonder Woman features. She recently made an uncredited cameo appearance in The Flash, though the scene was cut.

With Peter Safran and James Gunn now running things at DC, it was believed that Gadot was perhaps done with playing Wonder Woman.

But, she has now confirmed that a threequel is in development.

"I love portraying Wonder Woman," she told ComicBook.com

"It's so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we're gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together."

Patty Jenkins did not walk away from Wonder Woman 3

When Wonder Woman 3 was cancelled, rumours spread online that it was due to a breakdown in the relationship between Warner Bros. and director Patty Jenkins.

Two suggestions emerged on the internet. One was that Jenkins left over script problems and the other was that she was simply informed by the studio that WW3 would not be moving forward.

"When there started being backlash about WW3 not happening, the attractive clickbait false story that it was me that killed it or walked away started to spread." she wrote on Twitter.

"This is simply not true. I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.

"I do not want what has been a beautiful journey with WW to land on a negative note. I have loved and been so honoured to be the person who got to make these last two Wonder Woman films. She is an incredible character. Living in and around her values makes one a better person every day. I wish her and her legacy an amazing future ahead, with or without me.

"Walking side by side with Lynda Carter, an absolute legend and beacon of goodness and light, has been a thrill. I have learned so much from her and will cherish her as a friend and mentor, always. My crew has been like family and fought every day to give the world the best films they could."

It is unclear at this point whether Jenkins will indeed return to direct Wonder Woman 3.
