'Tashi, a tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event -- close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend.'
Sounds like your classic love triangle in this one, but Zendaya certainly appears to be an engaging lead as a character the likes of which we've never seen her play before - devious, manipulative, self-centered and willing to do anything for success.
Challengers was originally set to be released in September of 2023 but this was pushed back due to the actor and writer strikes in Hollywood.
It is directed by Luca Guadagnino, who says he took on the project due to the exciting script as well as the prospect of working with Zendaya as well as producer Amy Pascal.
When asked by Collider what attracted him to the project, the acclaimed director said: "Many elements. The great script from Justin Kuritzkes, sexy and fun, and never done something like that. Working with Amy Pascal, who I adore, who I feel, respectfully to her wonderful husband, I feel married with. And Zendaya, of course, she's just inspiring and sublime. So there were so many great elements that I couldn't say no, basically. I was like, I have to say yes."
