In 2019, a live-action remake of The Lion King was released to enormous commercial success.

On a budget of $250 million, it earned an astonishing $1.663 billion worldwide which makes it the current seventh highest-grossing movie of all time.

Critically, the reception was positive, particularly for the voice performances, but negativity surrounded the lack of emotion on the faces of the characters compared to the beloved 1994 original.

What is the plot of Mufasa: The Lion King?

Official premise:

'The prequel about the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands, goes back to the African savanna where Rafiki tells Kiara—daughter of Simba and Nala—the story of her grandfather while Timon and Pumbaa add colour commentary.'

The story will be part prequel and part sequel, allegedly akin to The Godfather Part II.

It will focus on how Mufasa became the king of Pride Rock, while also dealing with the aftermath of the events of The Lion King. The story will be told via Rafiki, Timon and Pumba. We all also learn a lot more about Scar's backstory.
