A posse pursuing the killer of Denton's partner tracks down Steve Carlisle. Carlisle makes himself known and tells the posse that he has been dispatched to survey the area for quartz, a compound used to make radio parts. At the Denton ranch, Carlisle meets Jane Fielding, a Denton employee. He learns that she wants to sell the ranch to a syndicate that wants to turn the ranch into a shady hotel and gambling palace. Paul Edwards, an employee of the syndicate, has been appointed to make all this happen. Jane Fielding throws a party in Edwards' honor and Hiram Denton is killed during that party. Carlisle is blamed. Carlisle escapes before the sheriff can arrest him and sets out to find evidence that Jane and Edwards are married and responsible for the murders.
