Ride a Crooked Mile plot

Mike Balan, a tough Cossack, immigrates from Russia to the United States. Mike heads west and joins a gang of cattle thieves. He soon takes charge of the gang. From his ex-wife Marie Simpkins, whom he has not seen for 20 years, Mike learns that he has a 21-year-old son. Montgomery 'Johnny' Simpkins also immigrates to the US and, like his father, becomes a cattle thief. Johnny, who has a softer character than his father, hardly knows him, but a rivalry develops between father and son, partly because Johnny is in love with Mike's girlfriend and saloon entertainer Trina. One day, Mike is arrested and imprisoned. Johnny joins the military and secretly devises a plan to help his father escape prison in Leavenworth. But then Johnny is plagued by a loyalty problem with his troops. He must choose between his father and a career in the military.
