Last Stand at Saber River was the last notable western by Tom Selleck that I had yet to see and it is certainly not his least. It is also not his best, but that is not realistic to expect and moreover that is not necessary at all to be able to call this a successful film. Because this film certainly is successful.

What is primarily a western starts off somewhat dramatically, with, among other things, the death of the youngest family member. Then the whole story becomes somewhat romanticized (in the end everyone manages to survive very easily) and loses its reality more and more (I have never seen an inexperienced woman shoot so well). Yet this is something that can easily be overlooked with a bit of good will and then does not have to bother you any further.

The film, based on a book by Elmore Leonard, has a nice story. A former soldier on the side of the Confederate States of America returns to his old home. What follows is a battle with some rebels who have taken his house. It seems clear who wants to settle with whom, but an interesting plot twist ensures that everything does not go as it seems to go. The somewhat glorified ending finally serves as a nice conclusion to a good story.

I didn't think it was bad, but somehow the story couldn't captivate me enough.
