'Trigger' Carson, a government agent, is sent by the governor to part of the country to round up a gang of cattle thieves who are terrorizing the area. Carson is ambushed, but with the help of prospector Jed Clinton, he escapes. A little later, Carson goes to the cattle ranch and tells them he's on the run from the law. Carson is then hired as a gunman by gang leader Luke Todd. Jed joins the gang as a cook. Luke's younger brother Marty is in love with Edith Elkins. Her father, rancher Jim Elkins, heads the vigilance committee, which was set up to guard against the cattle thieves. Luke is against his brother Marty's romance with Edith. Luke, who wants to bring a large herd of stolen cattle across the border, orders Carson to kidnap Edith.
