After the American Civil War, Clay Morgan returns from Andersonville detention camp and becomes a marshal in a New Mexico town. He is called 'Black Patch' because he lost an eye in the war. One day, his former friend Hank Danner arrives in town with his wife Helen. Helen used to be Clay's flame. Clay must arrest Hank because he is suspected of a bank robbery. The corrupt saloon owner "Frenchy" De Vere lets Hank escape because he wants to know where the stolen money is. When Hank tells De Vere, he kills him and blames Clay. Helen also suspects Clay of her murder. man.
