According to the opening credits, this film is based on a battle that took place in August 1950 between a North Korean army unit and a group of untrained student soldiers. That may well be true, but the execution in this film clearly seeks the boundaries of credibility and, certainly in the last part, goes beyond them. In my eyes, it is a patriotic pamphlet with over-the-top drama that —apart from the realistic-looking beginning— fails to convince. Quite exciting, but plausible? Not really. I often have those doubts about Korean action films with a lot of violence.

That Korean cinema can make excellent war films we have seen before with The Frontline and The Brotherhood of War. That they are not averse to a bit of drama and hero worship is also clear, the result is an excellent film that can compete with The Frontline but still has to acknowledge its superior in The Brotherhood.

71 into the fire contains an extremely simple but no less true story. A number of recruited students who are given the task of guarding an unimportant point but receive the full wrath of the northern troops. The story of the various characters who clash with each other but find each other towards the end to put their differences aside is nice. It actually doesn't really matter because 71 into the fire is about war and damn, they can portray that well.

The war shown is also delicious and spectacle at its best. They are also not averse to a bit of drama, something that they do quite well. The soundtrack, the acting, it is all more than sufficient. One of the few things I can find as criticism is that they apparently did not have any T-34s available and that Shermans are considered tanks of the northern troops. Oh, detail. Apparently the budget was up... It doesn't matter. 71 into the fire is a fine film and a nice addition to my war collection.

Reasonable war film. The story is simple but is expertly worked out. The structure is good and time is taken for the character development of the main characters. But they are soon confronted with the horrors of war. The action scenes are strongly portrayed but with the necessary drama and heroism. Not that that is bad because it is a reasonable spectacle that bursts from the screen. Visually everything is beautifully portrayed.3.5
