Ayla: The Daughter of War plot
In 1950, in the midst of the ravages of the Korean War, Sergeant Süleyman stumbles upon a half-frozen girl with no parents and no help. Upset, scared and near death, this little girl steals the heart of Süleyman, who risks his own life to save her, smuggle her to his army base and take her to safety. Not knowing her name and unable to communicate with her, Süleyman calls her Ayla, in memory of the moon on the fateful night they met.

Exactly what I thought! The Turks voted en masse for this movie. Perhaps by Turkish standards this is incredibly good, but to be honest, I didn't think it was that great. A melodrama about a true war story; however, I miss the atmosphere of a real war. It is too tame, too sweet, and too cheerful. The acting is mediocre, and the characters are greatly exaggerated. I was also bothered by the abundance of (often ill-chosen) music; a little less would have been nice. The whole film feels fake and therefore fails to strike a chord at all. At times it doesn't even look that bad, but the action is quite scarce. The humor could have been left out as well; it detracts even more from an already not-so-great film. The story certainly has potential, but the director didn't do it justice. So, nothing much to write home about, and the film was rightly not nominated for an Oscar.

A poignant true story about a Turkish UN soldier who takes a little Korean girl under his wing during the Korean War and builds a touching father-daughter relationship with her. Heartbreaking to see how unwillingness and/or bureaucratic rules prevent that relationship from surviving after the war ends. The “happily ever after” is no valid excuse for all those lost years.
A beautiful film that kept me on the edge of my seat from the first meeting between the soldier and the girl and didn't let go. It is a pity, though, that you can't make true stories more beautiful than they are. As a result, I was left with somewhat ambivalent feelings about the film.

What an impressive and emotional film. Ayla: The Daughter of War tells a beautiful and moving story about the special bond between a Turkish soldier and a Korean girl during the war. The film manages to touch you from the very beginning and makes you truly empathize with the characters.
A beautiful story about love, humanity, and hope, despite the horrors of war. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys true-story and emotional films.
