Attack Force Z plot

"Mel Gibson blasting his way to hell and back"

A Special Forces Unit was established in Australia, which carried out more than 300 operations during the Second World War. Survivors of an American plane crash are held captive on a Japanese island. Captain PG Kelly is the leader of a Special Forces Unit made up of five hard commandos, who must rescue the survivors. It is Kelly's first mission as leader and Sergeant Costello continues to remind him of it. Once on the island for a while, the mission turns out not to be so easy after all. Island residents come to the rescue, but this only seems to further jeopardize the mission.

It's sometimes close to the Rambo movies, with a lot of gunfights, especially at the end, but normal

a nice, fresh war film that doesn't linger anywhere with a blossoming romance (You saw that one

arrive soon), and even some kung fu, with a growing sympathy for the residents. The

commandos led by Gibson are given reasonable space to distinguish their characters

while the action scenes were well portrayed. Gibson played a few years before this one

movie in (The first) Mad Max, and plays here with a smooth fluency like we do in most

(average) films are used to from him. A war film without urgency, of course, but it does

entertaining and that took me with ease.

Film that does not attract in advance, the art design still looks a bit cultish, but given the age of the film, the title, and the unfamiliarity of the film in mind, you know in advance that this is not going to be great.

And it takes some searching with the poor image quality and the even worse sound quality, but once on land it is clear that the commandos led by the lieutenant are serious and waiting for many Japanese to kill them. And for a moment Attack Force Z seems to be on the mend with a reasonable cast in the form of Mel Gibson and Sam Neill, and the film regularly overflows with strong action against an image of Japanese who excel in oppression and sadism. Also good to mention is the not too long playing time.

Still, things go a bit wrong for me in the village where the father of the Asian girl turns out to be half Bruce Lee when two Japanese enter. That would not have worked for me then. Also a pity, and already mentioned, the stereotypical image of the Japanese. Of course I know that they have committed serious war crimes, but an image with a somewhat decent intellectual Japanese person would be a relief for once. Not every Japanese person is sadism incarnate and out for torture and blood, an image that is confirmed here.

Apart from that, this Attack Force Z is quite striking as solid, it is certainly not great, but it is not all that bad either.
