The Hide plot
On the windswept Suffolk mudflats, a bird hut creaks, with inside Roy Tunt, a prematurely aged, slightly obsessive-compulsive birdwatcher. With one more possible sighting, the elusive and gregarious plover, his list of 'spotted' British birds will be complete. Tunt has his shortwave radio, packed lunch and a photo of his ex-wife Sandra for company. Suddenly, in the middle of a conversation with Sandra's photo, the door flies open and a scruffy, unshaven and bleeding stranger blows in who introduces himself as Dave John, a refugee from the storm. After a tense introduction, the two men discover they have a lot in common. They share the sandwiches, the tea and personal experiences, which are honest, sometimes poignant and often funny. But while the two men are forging a bond, they hear on the radio that a manhunt is underway by the police...
