Fine.

The genre designation is drama/horror again, which is also correct, but Stephanie is not a modern genre mix. It is a film that neatly balances horror and drama and keeps that balance alive until the end, so no forced genre switches halfway through.

Goldsman also shows himself to be a skilled horror director. The setup is mysterious, the mystery is kept alive and when everything is finally on the table, there is still enough tension to keep the ending interesting. Goldsman always lets go just enough, knows how to keep some things in the middle and does not fall into a plot that has already been told 100 times.

Furthermore, stylishly portrayed and well acted. The film may have some real outliers, American Hollywood often lurks around the corner so it is a bit tame, but thanks to a short playing time and sufficient tension, this film easily holds the attention. Small surprise, nice recommendation, really great or a cracking future genre classic it is not..

3.5*

Good build-up in tension and atmosphere. A calm and peaceful start with a girl playfully frolicking around in a house alone. At first glance, nothing much going on, although a girl frolicking around in a house alone for a long time is strange of course. That aspect is emphasized very subtly. And from that realization, it goes further and further by adding small facts and events, the tension is increased and the atmosphere becomes more oppressive and ominous.

Despite the short running time, Goldsman takes the time to introduce mystery and suspense into the story in a relaxed and detailed manner. This is done very gradually and skillfully. By adding details, a small mystery becomes more extensive and pressing, and the film glides almost imperceptibly from a state of mild discomfort to a state of terrifying oppression. Yes, mystery and suspense are very subtly conducted and played with until a suffocating atmosphere is created from which it is almost impossible to escape.

Goldsman is not averse to effects such as rain and thunder. Sounds corny and cheap, but that is not the case in this film. It definitely enhances the atmosphere. Other fright effects also have a considerable impact. Even a few predictable jump scares still frighten due to the high level of oppression that the film reaches.

Good acting by the young girl who plays the lead role. In the many scenes that she plays alone and with the other characters, she knows how to convince in her fear, her playfulness and anger.

Exciting film. Atmospheric film. Surprising film.

I am very happy with every new horror film that still wants to surprise a little bit and this Stephanie succeeds quite well. Girl alone in the house with happy dolls, crayons, cuddly toy and a knife in the ceiling .... okay and in between zapping from My Little Pony to other happy cartoons we see something about a disaster or invasion or ... yes instead of that child giving us the chance to see what exactly is going on we are already back with the care bears.

Take a look for yourself, the little girl is doing very well by the way. A bit of an M. Night Shyamalan-esque film.
