About a country girl (played quite nicely by Chloe Levine) who wants to be a movie star. Of course, things don't go very smoothly. So, around the auditions, she takes on a job at a sleep clinic. She watches the sleeping patients during the night. So far, the film offers nothing original. Director and writer Racheal Cain, however, adds a touch of originality to her story. It turns out the clinic has a program that transforms the patients' dreams and desires into reality after treatment. That might sound appealing for the patient, but since Somnium is a psychological thriller, it's disappointing. There are side effects.

Somnium thrives on atmosphere. An atmosphere that feels unsettling. The story unfolds slowly, and though atmospherically filmed, there's little suspense. As expected, dreams and reality blur, and Chloe Levine is affected by this as well. I wasn't overly enthusiastic. That wasn't Chloe's fault. She also can't help that the story essentially got stuck in the interplay between dreams and reality. I got a little tired of constantly having to guess what's a dream and what's not. I also got a little tired of the characters surrounding Chloe, who are so conspicuously vaguely developed by Rachel Cain that they're not very interesting.

In Somnium, the atmosphere is rock solid. Narratively speaking, very little happens. The film has no real highlights. You're watching something that just won't get going. At least, that's how I experienced it. Unfortunately, an uplifting showdown also fails to materialize. Instead, the film concludes with a weak message, which, of course, I hadn't thought of myself. I immediately felt much better.

A suspenseful film with an oppressive, ominous atmosphere and music that 'sucks' you into the story from the very beginning.

Ultimately, you can somewhat see the twist coming, but despite that, the layers (the subconscious in the dream) are beautifully rendered because a new world was created time and again, exactly as she wished.

She had to face her greatest fear (the demon, that strange creature), and she literally did. Afterward, her dream came true after all. So, she herself had been one of the 'sleepers' all along.

Don't expect blood or gore in this film; it relies mainly on atmosphere. That is also indicated in most reviews here.

Personally, I find the atmosphere to be the most decisive factor in my rating. Because of that, I was completely immersed in it, which doesn't happen often lately.

Highly recommended to see, and in my opinion also rated way too low here on MM... but those are probably reviewers who had certain expectations and ended up disappointed as a result...

It was somewhat similar to The Substance, but also very different...

But then again, there's no accounting for taste.
