Charlie Nash is an expert in video game testing. One day, his life collapses when he learns that his girlfriend Kate was fatally struck by a bullet in a tragic shooting. Both his friends and his job leave him cold afterwards; he finds his only solace in playing computer games. He receives a mysterious game in the mail, which he immediately tries. He ends up in a surprisingly realistic 3D world and suddenly has to fight for his life.
