Very original film from a time when this concept was still very innovative. Of course you already had Tron, but are there any other movies where you get into a computer game that are older? The rating is not as I had hoped. Normally Mamoru Oshii's films are love at first sight, but I suspect that that flag mainly applies to his animation films. Despite this, I've seen enough elements that I really appreciate and am now pinning my hopes on revisions.

The sepia colors are nice, but it's a bit too thick for me. It is also noticeable that the digital effects are very old-fashioned. Still, it doesn't bother me as much if you realize that such CGI can be perfectly justified in a digital world. In fact, I do appreciate it. In any case, the story isn't overly complicated, although it reminded me of Tarkovsky's Stalker. I'm still looking for why it doesn't work: the slow pace? The purpose of the story? Again, I look forward to the review. Preferably with a like-minded person, because this is a film that invites you to think about it mentally.

Avalon

Strong film again from Oshii. Avalon is bursting with atmosphere, and audiovisually this is a real gem. The atmosphere (especially in the beginning) is nice and dark and eerie, and it's no wonder that humanity is getting lost in virtual reality. Ultimately, that is also the choice that Ash will face. Do I want to keep up appearances and live in a dream world? Or do I accept the gray reality? Oshii leaves a lot to the viewer's interpretation and above all provides an atmospheric and exciting film experience. Foremniak does it well, the classical music and score are strongly chosen, and the cinematography and settings ensure that you are immediately gripped by this world.

Mixed feelings about this film; could hardly be otherwise given the widely varying reviews. Visually it is atmospheric and it is all well put together and the music is beautiful and very special. I'm having a bit of trouble with the story structure. The first 10 minutes are quite spectacular and I was actually expecting a movie genre Starship Troopers but it is certainly not an action movie, that should be clear. After the first 10-15 minutes, however, the film continues endlessly at a very slow tempo, a slowness that is enhanced by the gray colors and the slow motions. Nevertheless, you keep following because the actors are performing well and you expect the story to break loose towards the end. But that's just not happening right now. So I stayed a bit hungry and the denouement is then dealt with in a few minutes. I can understand that some people break this film and on the other hand I can also understand that some think this is the max and look for everything behind it. It gets 3.5 stars from me.
