Maze plot
"The opposite sex is the greatest art form of all."
Lyle Maze, a successful painter who also begins to explore sculpture, has built up an emotional armor to protect herself from other people. He has Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome and an aversion to romance. In addition to suffering from uncontrollable physical tics and loud outbursts, Lyle also suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Afraid that his artistic talents and his illness draw from the same source, he avoids the well-intentioned advice of his doctor friend Mike (Craig Sheffer) and refuses to try new drug treatments. He also disapproves of attempts to match him with women. But when Mike decides to go to Africa for seven months for Doctors Without Borders, Lyle finds herself in a precarious position. Callie (Laura Linney), Mike's girlfriend, has confided in him that she is pregnant, but she doesn't want to use this to mend her troubled relationship. Soon, Lyle coaches Callie in a childbirth class and acts as a surrogate father-to-be and falls in love with her.
