Capt. Cliff Brandon is an American pilot serving in China in 1943, flying Allied soldiers to Burma. He is very good at his job, but also emotionally broken by the many comrades he has seen die in two years of war. When he's not flying or preparing his new colleagues, he often spends his time dead drunk. On one of his drunken nights, he gives an old Chinese man money in exchange for his daughter's domestic services. When he wakes up from his daze, however, he doesn't know what to do with her.
