Somewhere between psychological melodrama and thriller. This is typically a movie that would have done well twenty years ago. Didn't think it was that bad, but it takes quite a while to get going. The many time jumps also form an obstacle to empathy. Concentration is a requirement. Girl on the Train has a completely fuzzy indistinct structure at the beginning, and as the film progresses, the puzzle pieces start to come together. It is a puzzle film, where the viewer has to try to make connections between characters and is encouraged to guess how it all works. To a certain extent it does work. Blunt is better cast in this role than in Sicario for example; I continue to find her a very exaggerated actress. The film does straighten itself out well towards the end with a strong plot twist . Doubt between 3 and 3.5* but still a 3 because the first hour was difficult for me to get through.

A very messy and slow start indeed. Which of the three women are we looking at and how do they fit into the story. Eventually it starts to clear up a bit and it becomes a very decent movie.

Around the mid 10's, these kinds of drama/thrillers were very popular, just think of Gone Girl for example. The Girl on the Train is also a nice mystery that is mainly supported by a well-played Emily Blunt, who still manages to carry the film on her own. She does play a convincing alcoholic, without you thinking that she is talking excessively with a double tongue or something.

The film mainly revolves around what exactly happened that one night when Blunt's character blacked out and the girl she's always spying on from the train (and coincidentally lives next door to her ex) goes missing.

The mystery is built up nicely and the film manages to maintain the tension well throughout the running time. The gray/gray filter over the film provides that extra depressing atmosphere. You have to love it and it's all a bit slow, but within this genre the Girl on the Train just does what it's supposed to do, without being exceptional.

3.5*
