In the winter before World War II, Jaroslav Hasschek from Czechoslovakia gives a pair of skates to his young daughter Vera Haschek. Vera soon turns out to be a skater in her country and after winning a championship she is invited to participate in the 'Lake Placid Carnival' in America. However, Vera refuses a contract, which is offered to her by showman Carlton Webb and his press agent Jiggers. When Vera learns that her country has been occupied by Nazi Germany, she wants to return to Czechoslovakia to support her people. To finance her return trip, Vera seeks support from her uncle Carl Cermack, who has an American passport. Vera invites Carl and his two spoiled daughters Irene and Susan to her performance in the 'New Years Eve' ballet in Lake Placid. However, Vera falls in love with her dance partner Paul Jordan. But Irene and Susan are also in love with Paul, who meanwhile tries to persuade Vera to stay in America and still sign a contract with Webb.
