Viy plot
A young priest takes the wrath of a devilish witch. To take revenge, the witch disguises herself as the remains of a beautiful young woman - whose last wish was to have a praying priest by her side for three days. Once trapped inside the church, the priest finds a stunning parade of gargoyles and demons.

I was already quite familiar with Russian fairy tale films for children, but this fairy tale film for adults is a different matter.
Where children's films are over-the-top from the start, it takes a very long time before the film shows its true nature. But when that happens, it is also a pleasure to watch this film.
Beautiful camera work, fantastic effects and atmospheric music ensure that this film exudes atmosphere.
As I said, it took me a while to get into it, and I imagine it will for most. But don't let that put you off, because you'll be rewarded big time for your efforts!

Well, I really don't care for the fans, but I couldn't do anything with this. Acting by a bunch of drunk amateurs, a terribly annoying soundtrack and it all just looked super ugly. It's also not scary or exciting anywhere. In fact, nothing happens the entire movie until the last 10 minutes when a bunch of terribly bad looking monsters show up. I was bored to death with this movie. Too bad!

Actually no idea how I came across this film. Completely coincidentally perhaps while googling when I was looking for folk horror or something. I certainly did not regret it and with its short playing time it is perfectly condensed to the essence. Particularly atmospheric already, it is immediately the greatest quality of the film in which the dressing, the decor and the mysterious gorgeous woman catch the eye.
What a scene there with that flying flight. Very beautiful, almost poetic. Superstition and mysticism are central here and we are in a time when religion was indeed very important and explanatory for many people.
You can also see the film as a Russian horror fairy tale. It depends on how you experience it. But it is certainly special!
