It is 1750 in Oberösterreich (the northeastern part of Austria). While an unmoved-looking woman [Natalija Baranova] walks through the forest with a crying baby, you feel that something terrible is about to happen. It literally costs the woman her head and it, along with the rest of her body, is exposed to the local environment. After this shocking prologue, the story focuses on Agnes, a young woman destined to marry and have children. Partly due to the social pressure that this entails, Agnes struggles enormously with her emotions. Fiala and Franz deliberately keep the pace slow with long, uninterrupted takes, routine actions and a minimum of dialogue. The dreary, often literally cold environment reinforces the feeling of loneliness and isolation. Naturally, this approach tests your patience, but in return you get an impressive denouement, anchored by the raw, experienced and ultimately unforgettable playing of Plaschg, who was also responsible for the music. She received the Austrian Film Prize for both her acting and her score. This won the same prize for best supporting actress (Hofstätter), best film (Ulrich Seidl), best editing (Michael Palm), best make-up (Judith Kröher, Tünde Kiss-Benke) and best production design (Andreas Donhauser, Renate Martin) .

Pleasant to watch? Absolutely not. But it is so oppressive that your gaze cannot escape it. The despair drips from the screen. After seeing it, I was not sure whether horror was a correct classification, but it certainly is. You can read the rest of my opinion here.

Egocentrism or self-realization were not exactly qualities that helped you as a woman. Not that Agnes fulfilled these, but this folk movie did show how meaningless life as a woman was for her somewhere in the middle of the 18th century in Austria and by extension the rest of Europe. The woman's task was to do the housework, please the man and bear children. The latter is rather difficult when the man is not very lustful. Even that was the woman's fault.

And when no explanation could be found and nothing helped, not even grandma's old remedies, then God knew what to do. And he has the last word and the woman was then the one who got the short end of the stick. The mother-in-law in the story became desperate and cursed so much misfortune because her son chose a slacker as a wife. Imagine having a depression ... Desperation then takes over. Is there a greater sin than murder? Apparently there is and that must be avoided at all times if your soul is to be saved...

Strong convincing film in a great post-medieval setting. Not pure horror, but one that sticks.
