A-stars in a B-movie, so it's still quite entertaining. Beauty has its price. And a bit creepy too. Moss makes it truly human, and the horror wasn't too bad, if a bit alien-like. Hudson also nailed her power woman character. That's why it almost gets two stars. A low-budget film, but the women elevate it a bit. Just enough.

Just like in his first film (Teen Spirit (2018)), Max Minghella directs a film about a woman who makes a living as an artist. Unlike his first film, this one doesn't feature a character at the beginning of her career, but someone whose best years are already behind her. A woman who, due to her age, is rarely cast anymore, is therefore no longer as successful, and does everything she can to get a role again. It's a path fraught with obstacles.

Shell is a horror film with a satirical slant. Shell exposes an industry and a society that reduces human dignity to an ideal of beauty. We already saw the combination of horror and satire regarding the theme of beauty in The Substance (2024). In that film, the tension and body horror started building early on. In Shell, it takes a bit longer for the effects of the rejuvenation treatment to take on exorbitant proportions. And when it does get going, it's not even very exciting. The absurdity of the horror creates moments of comedy rather than terror.

I find the genre designation "Horror/Thriller" a bit misleading. Shell is more of a black comedy with some elements of horror allure. The humor is on the dark side, but just a bit too sweet. Too audience-friendly. I think the film could have adopted a much more biting and somber tone. I suspect the hope for broad commercial success got in the way. Nevertheless, Shell is quite enjoyable to watch. The story moves along pleasantly, and the two actresses in the lead roles (Elisabeth Moss and Kate Hudson) are enjoyable. Shell is good entertainment. Just don't expect too much.
