Psychiatrist Cynthia [Ashley Greene] can see the deep-seated traumas that her clients see through touch. During a session with Riley [Shayelin Martin], Cynthia sees a demonic entity feeding on Riley's traumas. Because of her own past, Cynthia feels it is too dangerous to help Riley. Her teenage daughter Jordan [Ellie O'Brien] can't bring herself to do so and decides to visit Riley at home in an attempt to help her with her own spiritual gift. Starts out as a routine demon horror with lame jump scares, but has a few successful moments in the second half. O'Brien is very good and turns out to be a classic scream queen, which makes this better than you would expect based on the basic story and introduction.

You can clearly see a shift in modern horror films. Where it used to be more about the narrative and dialogues, nowadays the atmosphere is more often decisive. That is well built up and in terms of form this film is entertaining, oppressive and at times scary. Depressing, the nature of this hungry spirit that torments young women is bestial.

The story and the characters are not worth mentioning and the plot can be written on a beer mat. I think that is a bit of a shame. Nevertheless, the acting is fine and what is in it in terms of story is convincingly delivered.

What works well is the girl's father. Who gives the whole thing a fatalistic character. A feeling of "there is no hope everyone dies". Unfortunately unfortunately those stupid Americans start to do some very strange things towards the end. I won't reveal anything more about it but this ending simply costs a point.

A 2.5 then

The familiar concept of an evil entity is presented here in a fun and exciting way. This is thanks to a slightly different approach, with a psychic therapist and a father each having their own opinions about whether to offer or accept help. The story is well-constructed, focusing on the father's and his daughter's motives and why he ultimately chooses to deal with the entity that held his daughter in check once and for all. You can also follow the therapist's reasons for initially refusing to go along to help his daughter, and later, after the disaster has happened, for doing everything she can for her own daughter. A few scary scenes appear, and the atmosphere is quite gloomy at times. The main characters also perform well, with Ellie O'Brien (Ashley Greene) playing a particularly strong role as the therapist's daughter. 7/10
