Idle Hands plot

"The touching story of a boy and his right hand."

Young Anton, who stays in his room for days and nights to torture his audience with hallucinatory music, visits his friends on Halloween night to stock up on marijuana. When he returns home the morning of Halloween, it is ominously quiet. Anton discovers that both his parents have been murdered and that their headless bodies have been used as Halloween decorations. When he goes to visit his friends Mick and Pnub, Anton learns that several mysterious murders have been committed in their town. It gradually dawns on Anton that he himself may well be responsible for the murders, because his own right hand appears to have a bloodthirsty will of its own.

Nice combination of horror and comedy. There is enough of both. The humor that makes good use of the horror elements is very successful. The horror is okay. The gore also looks great. Nicely drawn into the absurd here and there, but in a well-considered way. No complaints about the amount of blood and kills. A lot and on the assembly line. And so funny.

The same magnification applies to the jump scares and the frolicking with elements from various horror subgenres. Also well done to the absurd. The exaggeration is funny. Yes, the unhinged hand does fine things.

Furthermore, some bland stoner humour, a few funny dialogue and hardly unpleasant characters. Pretty okay all.

An up-tempo movie too. Scenes and action follow each other in rapid succession. There is no such thing as slow breathing. Added to this is a well-fitting score. The fast punk rock in particular is the perfect accompaniment to this comical horror mix. Dynamic and tasty. "I wanna be sedated". And that worked well.

Apparently the movie flopped. It seems clear to me that it is not a masterpiece. It's definitely not a flop. undeserved.

Nice movie.

Still rock solid, this delicious horror comedy. Used to be one of my big favorites, but even after all these years this is still very tasty. You take one of the best scenes from Evil Dead 2 and knit an entire movie around it. The film does not pretend to be a serious horror film for a second and that becomes clear when we meet Fred Willard as Anton's father in the opening scene. Then you already know that you don't have to take it all so seriously. Devon Sawa is a fine lead as the lazy Anton, with nice supporting roles for the cute Jessica Alba, the tough Vivica A. Fox and the witty bastard Jack Noseworthy. But the show is stolen by the chemistry between protagonist Sawa and his best friends Seth Green and Elden Henson. Would have loved to see countless sequels or spinoffs with these guys.

The premise of Idle Hands is very simple and thank goodness it stays that way throughout the movie. A lazy boy's hand is possessed by the devil, period! Normally a movie like this would come to a halt when a character - like Vivica A. Fox's - comes to explain, but that doesn't happen here. A love story often slows down the pace in these kinds of films, but the romance between Sawa and Alba does not cause any delay. In fact, it's actually very nicely done. Idle Hands is wonderfully smooth, with a soundtrack full of rock music by the likes of Mötley Crüe, Rob Zombie and The Offspring - the latter band even has a role in the film. Idle Hands still contains quite nice effects - only a few CGI moments are a bit dated - and the humor is often wonderfully physical, like a good, pitch-black farce. In that respect, the film does a lot of justice to the scene from Evil Dead 2.

Fuck it, 4.5 stars.

Watched this video and it was entertaining. A mix of comedy and horror, but it wasn't all that high-quality. Still had to laugh a few times. Still some famous people in this movie.

It was an ideal film for a lazy movie night, certainly not a masterpiece, but still fun to watch.
