Meine Wüste, meine einzige, meine sanfte Vorhölle, meine Erlösung.

A few strikingly beautiful shots—naturally of the desert—but the most brilliant image of the entire film is, surprisingly enough, when Bachmann gives a speech. Perhaps a tiny bit staged for that purpose, but effective nonetheless, and perhaps also the core of Bachmann's life story. But visually, it is perhaps more interesting that the entire film quite consistently employs a very fine, stylized visual style. Impressive work.

Krieps miraculously succeeds in portraying Bachmann as a rather difficult and unpleasant character, with just about the only redeeming quality being that the men in her life are even more unpleasant. Whether that contradicts reality, well, as they put it so nicely in textbooks is left as an exercise for the reader—but the film doesn't exactly encourage you to immediately and enthusiastically delve into her life. It might have been more interesting to show some of her work as well—more than just that one quote the film ends with and my story begins with. There are indeed a number of very interesting, thought-provoking observations in the film, but it feels like a missed opportunity that just a little bit more wasn't done with them.

The message Von Trotta apparently wants to convey is thereby more important than the person the film is about. That this is almost even more patronizing than the despised patriarchy apparently falls somewhere on the margins of the end justifying the means. In that case, I feel that Bachman deserved more and better than to be used in this way—used, while her work remains hidden away, and her life story is treated only very selectively. A pity.
