The life story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer [Jonas Dassler], the German Protestant theologian who, after an inspiring period as an exchange student in New York, returns to his homeland to work for religious reform and who, at an early stage, called on the church to speak out against and turn away from National Socialism. On April 9, 1945, he was executed for his involvement in a failed assassination attempt on Hitler. This biography is fascinating as long as it focuses on Bonhoeffer's theological debates and his concrete actions to combat National Socialism. When the inevitable end begins to approach, Komarnicki takes on the weighty tour to emphasize how heroic, pious and self-sacrificing Bonhoeffer was. And this while the still relevant message is more important than the man.
