Witch Hunt is a great movie with an original story. A bit slow in terms of pace and development, but that fits with the story. The acting is more than fine. All in all quite enjoyed it.

Difficult.

Witch Hunt belongs to the film that has an extremely well conceived concept, but can hardly work towards it. I do wonder, however, why this film has remained so under the radar in the end. At the time multiple news articles with the trailer, a talented cast, and yet it has an invisible existence to this day.

We are introduced to a concept that normally takes place in the past tense, which is witch-hunting. This time we have the concept in a modern, contemporary setting. I like that idea, as it offers creativity to some great ideas. The film does not lack solid ideas, there are plenty of them, but it does have a lack of pace.

Callahan is very committed to atmosphere. She's getting somewhere by design. The house looks nice, some nice filters are thrown over the lens and on a cinematographic level it regularly looks okay. That does not deprive the film of the fact that it is a restrained, lifeless event. Very few moments of tension or ominous atmosphere, and that doesn't work any better if you slow down the pace even more along the way.

The acting is decent but the actresses are pushed pretty far back into the corner. You have an Adlon and you have a Cowen, but both actresses barely get the space to be distinctive as characters. Lots of serious looks, but rarely a scene that gives the viewer the impression that they deserve where they are. And that's not necessarily their fault, but especially the director's who carries a slightly too ambitious mindset.

In terms of content, the film is regularly spot on, but the effect that wants to score on atmosphere is left at home. The film can hardly get through in the second half, I did count down the minutes. I'm glad the film wasn't seen on the big screen afterwards, that would be a waste of my evening and money.
