Late 1967. A young orphan boy named Bruno moves in with his loving grandmother in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. After meeting some apparently charming but diabolical witches, the boy and his grandmother take refuge in a luxury hotel on the coast. Unfortunately, they arrive just as the Supreme Witch has sent undercover her henchmen from all over the world to carry out her demonic plans.

Mediocre remake of Roald Dahl's classic tale, adapted earlier and better by director Nicolas Roeg. It's just not all this time. The characters are not very interesting, the atmosphere is not dark and the plot is not exciting enough. The film also disappoints in terms of special effects, while this is usually something you can trust director Robert Zemeckis with. Unfortunately; this is his fourth miss in a row, after Allied, The Walk and Welcome To Marwen.

I join the list of disappointed viewers...

As so often I wondered why this movie needed a remake. The only acceptable reason is that people want to tell the story from a different perspective and that you learn something extra. Obviously this movie doesn't, I know the exact same thing I did over 30 years ago.

Of course, the remake was made to let the new computer techniques loose. So we see the chief witch fly and our reactions were boo whoo big whoop. It's not scary, it doesn't contribute anything and children are now more used to it.

Normally I'd keep it at 2*, but this one gets a half star deducted for something that's increasingly bothering me in Hollywood: neo-racism. They all mean well and turn the protagonists into African-Americans. Ok, that's how it should be these days, equality happiness, everyone happy. But then people will still stereotype these people by dragging in voodoo and hoodoo.

I would have voted for Obama for a third time if I could for the Jordan Peele aficionados.

I wouldn't call it a drama yet, but what a dragon of a film adaptation!! I haven't seen the first film so I can't compare them.

Bruno as Hero was soulless and not an asset to the film. Just like Hathaway (who I think plays a lot better in other films) and Tucci (I also think he comes into its own in other films). Hathaway, in my opinion, gives no sense to her character and neither does Tucci give his character a swung. Spencer carried the film for me, along with the mice!

Rock's voice-over was in my opinion cringe-inducing, even irritating!

I read a lot of people about what they think is bad CGI, I didn't think that was an issue myself. I especially liked the sniffing of the nose.

I also had no problem with the change of ethnicity and cultural background. I didn't think it was just done to make a statement or to build goodwill.

As far as I'm concerned, so much more could have been taken out of this film, Dahl's wonderful humor was not shown at all. Even the mice, although I thought these turned out well, could have had more soul and similarities with the children in terms of appearance/behaviour.

Anyway, Dahl's magic definitely didn't have it.

As this is a family movie I will add the opinion of my kids when they watch it.
