The Gorgon plot

"A venture into the deepest, starkest realms of the supernatural..."

A petrified corpse is found every second full moon night in the Central European town of Valdorf. Could one of the Gorgons—the monsters of Greek mythology who were so ugly that anyone looking at them petrified—have come back to life? The local scientist Dr. Namaroff seems to know more about the matter. Paul Heitz, the son and brother of two of the victims, and his mentor Professor Meister investigate.

Well worth staying up so late for. The make-up effects are of course no longer scary and even quite bad, but the atmosphere and the acting are no less. Those old Hammer films may almost always have the same cast and the same sets, but somehow they always remain intriguing because of those wonderfully creepy soundtracks, dramatic endings and wonderful acting by Cushing and Lee.

The Gorgon has a rather bizarre script (although the plot description above is woefully worse than the story actually is), but remains intriguing in all its vagueness throughout the film. Beautiful castles, music and wonderful British acting with a denouement that is not nearly as scary as it once was, make it all together a pleasantly short 83 minutes of very enjoyable kitsch.

Peter Cushing as the bad guy and Christopher Lee as the good guy, usually it's the other way around. Nice Hammer horror around the Medusa legend. Starts very well, at some point you get what's going on and then it actually goes on a bit too long. Again a nice finale in the castle.

Reasonable film about a town where a few people turn to stone when they see a monster. A fairly simple story and although not much happens, this film is easy to watch. The entire gothic setting provides an atmospheric whole. The film is also certainly not too long.
