I'll sit down for a new one from Jayro Bustamante. The Guatemalan is one of my favorite Latin American directors and his last production dates back 5 years with La Llorena in which the civil war was highlighted through a number of fantasy elements. With Rita he goes a whole step further. The fantasy part dominates and controls the film.

This also means that a lot of attention was paid to the visuals and the context around the plot. It sometimes results in dreamlike imaginative images with angels and a kind of atmospheric deaths in an orphanage.

Too much attention is paid to it, which causes the actual plot to be somewhat snowed under. The ending is powerful, but does not save the film sufficiently because of the long-winded, uninformative middle section. No idea what Bustamante's motives were for this. The plot about the abuses of orphanages or the vulnerability of children in home situations could have been done differently and better.
