Fortunately, Matilda has a sweet teacher who is very impressed by Matilda's intelligence. Then Matilda discovers that she possesses telekinetic powers, and when she has them under control, she uses them to teach the headmaster and her parents a lesson.

So Matilda.

Also a book adaptation here, just forget which writer it is. When I was younger I thought this was quite an impressive film, but now it's not that bad. Now I just see it as a normal kids movie actually.

A lot of annoying types are walking around again. The director in particular was almost unbearable, of course it's part of her character, but still. Matilda herself was cute, but that's about it, Davidtz also plays a pretty (too) standard character.

A lot of fantasy and a pretty memorable scene here and there, but the final result is just an ordinary children's film that excels in fantasy, but in terms of execution it is clearly not much more special than the rest.

Dark and sweet, coarse and sweet; these are combinations that Roald Dahl is especially good at. In that respect, director Danny DeVito has set the tone very well in a film that mainly excels because of an excellent cast. DeVito himself plays the very nice roles of Matilda's parents with Rhea Perlman and Mara Wilson is also well cast as a sympathetic main character. But the most memorable is Pam Ferris as Trunchbull, she plays her part with great pleasure. DeVito makes a colorful and warm family film with the occasional nice dark edge, although it never gets scary like the Dahl films The Witches van Roeg or the BFG animation film. Matilda's tone is just a bit too sweet and especially cartoonish. In that respect, there is still a brake on the film somewhere, DeVito could have gone a step further here and there.

3.5 stars.

Matilda I read as a book at a young age and the author was one of my favorites. At a later age I went to see the film and my imagination quickly ran out. In other words, I liked the book better than the movie. It can also certainly have to do with age, but that is by no means the only factor.
