I completely agree with mister blonde. Smoothly and skillfully told, with a dubious hero whose actions are not excused, a very lively opening sequence at the merry-go-round, a few small and large jokes ( how Liliom has to wait at the police station, how that turn of events later in heaven comes back, and how he reacts to it), and the depiction of where Liliom ends up after his suicide is very atmospheric (with the exception of those cheesy angels of course). The energetic Charles Boyer is almost unrecognizable to those who know him mostly as the evening-dressed slippery charmer in Hollywood, while the meaningless Madeleine Ozeray is so dead it's hard to imagine he could ever have coveted her (although he sits on the bench from the beginning quite explicitly looking for her breasts).
The play by Ferenc Molnár on which this film is based was not only previously filmed in Hollywood, but also inspired the musical Carousel by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II from 1945. It was also released in 1956 made into a film, and the 50th Anniversary Edition double DVD of it contains an excellent print of this Liliom, including Dutch subtitles, on the second disc.
