Peter Frye is an ordinary American boy whose parents die suddenly while on a trip. Peter is not told what happened to them, but is sent from one family member to another. Eventually he ends up with 'Gramp', a friendly old boss with whom he gets along. When Peter learns that he has become an orphan, his hair spontaneously turns a green color. His environment is of course surprised.
