Yesterday, I watched this family movie with the kids. I was briefly thrown off guard, because I thought I was seeing the 70s or 80s version in the woods with the puma cubs. So, this remake, which isn't bad either (though not good either, for that matter). Mediocre trash tailor-made for 8-year-olds. It also follows the same pattern of tenderness, coziness, and humor throughout. And, of course, the (utterly stupid) bad guys couldn't be missing. The fact that an animal plays the lead role and becomes the hero of the whole story is saccharine, predictable, but also fun to watch for a change.

The children certainly enjoyed it, and so did I, quite a bit. Who are we to disagree with them? A success as a remake, at least. We shouldn't make more of it than that. Just a nice kids' movie!

Loose remake of the (still) irresistible classic surprise hit by his father Joe from 1974 about a stray dog who wins the hearts of two children [Gabriel Bateman, Darby Camp] who witness a pawn shop robbery and are kidnapped. Benji to the Rescue! Brandon Camp added a backstory and chose to have Benji perform human tricks (turning on a light, opening a door with a key). In doing so, he loses the elements that made Benji (and his illustrious predecessor Lassie) so successful. Joe Camp produced it and should have known better. If your toes don't curl when Benji walks alone through the streets to the sounds of John Hiatt's 'Have a Little Faith in Me', then I don't know what will.
