The teenage Ziggy has gathered a large number of fans via the internet with the help of his folk rock songs. However, he wants to improve his music to impress his classmate Lila. Meanwhile, his mother Evelyn provides shelter for victims of domestic violence where she meets Angie and her son Kyle. Evelyn takes Kyle under her wing.

When Ziggy [Finn Wolfhard] was still young, his mother Evelyn [Julianne Moore] took him to the many protest marches she participated in. She still fights for her ideals and is absorbed in her work at a shelter for battered women, but he throws himself completely into a live stream on which he plays his songs with his guitar for more than 20,000 subscribers. Evelyn approaches Kyle [Billy Bryk], the (ideal) son of one of her victims, and Ziggy approaches Lila [Alisha Boe], who is just as idealistic and persistent as his mother. There's little story to make this meanders at times, but Eisenberg's screenplay is full of sharp observations and Wolfhard and Moore are excellent. Emile Mosseri's songs are custom written and the final scene is simple, but effective. Based on Eisenberg's audiobook of the same name.

Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut is, in my eyes, a failure. His self-written film about egocentrists, who are constantly lost in contact with others, hardly manages to captivate. The only thing that lingers is annoyance at the narcissistic protagonists. I know there are such people. The best thing you can do is keep them at a distance, as the movie wisely advises.

Good movie about a teenage boy who makes music for his online fans. The relationship between mother and son, who are clearly not on the same page, is central here. And this one is also realistically worked out with some great dialogues and good acting. In itself a fine directorial debut by Jesse Eisenberg, but the individual scenes are ultimately better than the whole. A small 3.5 stars.
