Charming, smooth and indeed entertaining, this film about Strauss junior who is about to exchange his musical career for a job in a bakery, but then gets his big chance. The classical music is beautifully woven into the story and the finale in particular, when the large orchestra plays An der schönen blauen Donau for the first time, is phenomenal, partly due to the editing. One has to take the romantic entanglements for granted, even though Matthews is really a beauty. Nothing wrong with that, although the Master himself apparently disagreed.

3.5*.

Hitchcock made this film as a snack before reuniting with his mentor Michael Balcon and starting his first series of successes. However, the master's hand is virtually invisible and given the subject it is no wonder. This is in fact a vehicle for singer Jessie Matthews who, with some help from a chef [Hindle Edgar], tries to bring the talented Johan Strauss Jr [Esmond Knight] out of the shadow of his widely respected, authoritarian father [Edmund Gwenn]. This culminates in an extremely commendable performance of "Der Blaue Donau". Food for fans of operetta, but not so much for fans of Hitchcock.

One of the last non-thrillers Hitchcock made before starting his series with The Man who knew too Much. Hitchcock really made films in many genres and with this one he even made an operetta film. A genre that was popular in German speaking countries and also in Great Britain at the time. The story itself is based on an operetta and has little to do with the reality of the historical characters Johan Strauss Jr. and Sr. except for the works that are performed by them. For me it is a wonderful comedy. Hitchcock was a man with a lot of humor and he also shows that in his later well-known suspense movies. In this film no suspense but only romance, music and comedy. Well portrayed - although perhaps standard by Hitch's standards - and with a nice pace. The most important thing is that the humor comes across well, 90 years later that is not always self-evident.
