1668; Islamic Jihad takes place in the Balkans in Southeastern Europe. A Bulgarian Christian region in the Rhodope Mountains is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of Islamization. A Corps of Janissaries is formed; Christian boys, who had been kidnapped as small children and taken from their Bulgarian families by the Ottomans, who raised them as Muslims and turned them into trained soldiers to serve the Ottoman Sultans. The corps, led by Karaibrahim, who was also kidnapped by the Turks as a small child, is moving to his native region to forcibly convert the local population to Islam. His atrocities astonish even the local Ottoman leaders. But the resistance of some local residents is very fierce. The Turkish governor searches for a peaceful solution, but beatings, rape, violence and rebellion break out. The mission is partly successful, many people are converted, but the death toll is high, and in the end the Bulgarians will keep their own language and traditions.
