At a house party hosted by Doris Parker, the daughter of a retired sea captain, Doris's friends gather to receive mail from their "adopted" soldiers in France. When one of them suggests that Doris write to Harry Townsend, who has no family or friends outside the army, she writes a note and he sends her a photo of a friend, as he does not have a photo of himself. Harry's letters awaken a love in Doris, causing her to reject Captain Jack Tims's fervent pleas. After Harry is wounded and believes he will die, his farewell letter inspires Doris to come visit.
