Una plot

"Absence makes the hurt grow stronger"

One day, when the young and beautiful Una shows up unannounced at Ray's office, they are forced to rethink their relationship. Why adult Ray [Ben Mendelsohn] and 13-year-old Una [Ruby Stokes] ever got along and had a sexual relationship is a mystery. Why the now 28-year-old Una [Rooney Mara] tracks down Ray in a factory and thinks he should question him on the spot is equally hazy. More importantly, this film is a case of "going from bad to worse": Una's behavior borders on the insane and the film takes some downright idiotic twists in the last half hour.

Perhaps screenwriter David Harrower, who adapted his own play, can come up with a motivation for Una's actions, but he has totally failed to convey that to the viewer.

This is filmed stage with static camerawork and slow dialogue, poorly edited and unimaginatively directed.

Big Pervert

An uncomfortable seat that captivates until the end. Different emotions pass by in an hour and a half. The past has clearly left scars, especially with Una. The confrontation, the unprocessed emotions, unanswered questions and feelings of revenge are discussed in dialogue at different places in the factory. At one point that got a bit tacky.

The whole side plot of the reorganization that played in the background didn't add much in my opinion.

An uncomfortable subject, and in the theatrical setting that occasionally produces fun (ehh, read interesting) scenes. And that requires a bunch of actors who can put that somewhat believable - but that's not really a problem with this cast. And ai ai ai, what a beautiful girl Rooney is.

That's where the positive news ends. Because I'm not too fond of the combination of Rooney and Ruby - they don't really look alike, but other than that they don't really come across as the same person. Mistake in casting and direction, I say. And so it is with Mendelsohn, who occasionally comes across in the flashbacks older than 15 years later.

And then the story. Credible may not be the right word , but it remains a bit too unclear what exactly Una wants to achieve with her visit. To be fair, with the fact that she has undoubtedly thought about it for a long time, you would expect a little more clarity about that. But maybe everyone is supposed to look for something in it themselves.

All in all, quite fascinating - you still want to know how it ends. But not a film that I will remember in five or ten years.
