Tom Brown helps his mother as best he can after his father's death during World War I. Tom's father was honored after the war and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Tom also gets a full scholarship to attend military academy in Culver. Tom, however, has doubts about his future as a soldier, but he understands the value of this gift and accepts the offer. During his training, Tom learns the truth about his father who in reality was not so heroic at all.
