To My Daughter plot
Laura Carlston is a respected high school poetry teacher in New York. Laura has three children: seventeen-year-old Anne, who always feels like she is in the shadow of her eldest sister; Bobby, a high-energy high school student, and twenty-eight-year-old Julie, a successful writer who has moved to Los Angeles. Julie is clearly Laura's favorite and when it turns out that Julie has a brain tumor and dies shortly afterwards, Laura's world collapses. She is unable to bear this grief with dignity and she begins to neglect her other children. In addition, she becomes obsessed with Julie's unfinished book and makes it her life's goal to fulfill Julie's ambition.
